Washing Machine Not Draining

Troubleshoot a washing machine that will not drain water properly.

Common symptoms:water in washernot drainingclothes wetstanding waterdrain problems

Troubleshooting Steps

1

Check for Unbalanced Load

An unbalanced load can prevent the spin cycle. Redistribute items evenly and restart the cycle.

2

Inspect Drain Hose

Check for kinks or clogs in the drain hose. Ensure it is not pushed too far into the standpipe (usually 6-8 inches max).

3

Clean the Drain Filter

Most front-loaders have an access panel with a drain filter. Place towels down, open the panel, and clean the filter.

Water will drain out when you remove the filter. Have towels ready.
4

Check the Drain Pump

Small items like coins or pins can jam the pump. Listen for humming without draining, which indicates blockage.

5

Verify Lid/Door Switch

Top-loaders will not drain if the lid switch is faulty. Front-loaders require the door to be sensed as closed.

6

Test Standpipe/Drain

The drain pipe may be clogged. Pour water directly into the pipe to test if it drains freely.
