Miele

Miele: built to be repaired, on its own terms

Miele is the one make in these kitchens where the repair-or-replace conversation usually ends in repair — the machines are built for a long service life and the parts stay catalogued — but they are diagnosed on the manufacturer's terms rather than by generic method.

How it is diagnosed

The machine keeps notes

Miele appliances hold a fault memory that can be read out at the machine, and the codes are specific rather than decorative: one for drainage, another for water detected in the base, others for individual sensors and heaters. On a dishwasher that has stopped mid-programme, the code separates a blocked filter and a tired drain pump from a leak the machine has decided to act on — and those are very different visits.

What follows from that is a habit rather than a trick: read the memory before touching anything, because the intermittent fault from three weeks ago is still in there.

The refrigeration

MasterCool columns behave like the rest, with tighter tolerances

Miele's built-in refrigeration is a tall integrated column like its neighbours, and the fault list rhymes: evaporator fan, sensors, the condensate path, the door. The difference is how little drift it takes before you notice — the temperature management is tight and steady, so a cabinet running a couple of degrees warm feels wrong long before it would on a coarser platform.

Integrated door mounting is the other recurring item. These doors are hung with the joinery and can be pulled out of true by a heavy panel, and once the seal is not meeting the cabinet along its full run, everything downstream — frost, humidity, a compressor that will not rest — follows from that one thing.

Parts

One channel, no substitutes

Miele parts come from Miele. There is essentially no aftermarket, which is a good thing for quality and a scheduling constraint for everything else: the component will be correct and it may not be on a shelf nearby. Anyone booking a Miele repair should be told the lead time honestly at the point of diagnosis rather than discovering it a week later.

This shop's own week is built-in refrigeration. If it is the Miele dishwasher rather than the column, the code on its display is the most useful thing you can hand to whoever comes out.

Third floor of a triple-decker off Sumner Hill, three flights with a turn at the top, and he took it in stride. A failed compressor relay had the cabinet warming slowly all week. The part was on his van and it was pulling down again before he left.

Cubes were coming out hollow and cloudy. He measured the fill and found pressure dropping across a clogged inline filter. New filter, fill time adjusted, and the clear ice module is behaving itself again.

Interior lighting was staying on with the door shut, which was slowly warming the whole cabinet and lifting the labels. A failed reed switch in the frame. He fitted a new one, checked both zones against a thermometer, and put every rack back where it was.
