Thermador, and the columns that will tell you what happened
Thermador refrigeration is one of the more diagnosable platforms in a premium kitchen: the columns keep a fault memory and their sensors can be measured rather than guessed at, so an intermittent complaint stops being a mystery quite quickly.
What is different
A fault history instead of a guess
The complaint that defeats most refrigeration diagnosis is the intermittent one: it was warm on Tuesday and it is fine now. A platform that records its own faults turns that into evidence — which sensor went out of range, how often, and whether the compartment ever actually lost temperature or only reported that it had.
The sensing itself is thermistor-based, which means each one has a resistance value at a known temperature and can be checked against it. A sensor reading three degrees high is a five-minute measurement and a small part, and without that measurement it looks exactly like a cooling fault.
What actually goes wrong
Icing, drainage and doors
The recurring fault on tall columns is ice where it should not be, usually because the evaporator fan is obstructed or the condensate drain has frozen at its exit. The second is the door: these units are heavy, the hinges are adjustable, and a column whose door no longer pulls itself the last centimetre will alarm, sweat around the seal and run continuously.
Frost inside a freezer column with a working defrost cycle is worth treating as a door or gasket problem until proven otherwise. Warm room air carries the moisture in; the coil is only where it lands.
The first four checks:
- Fault memory read at the panel before anything is dismantled
- Each thermistor measured against its resistance table, not compared to the display
- Evaporator fan and the condensate drain path, which cause most of the icing
- Hinge adjustment and gasket compression along the full length of a tall door

A Thermador kitchen usually arrives as a set, and the dishwashers and ranges have their own well-known behaviours — a leak sensor that shuts the machine down and keeps the drain pump running, a star burner whose simmer setting stops holding. Those are somebody else's trade and we will say so.
