Sub-Zero repair, and why these units fail the way they do
Sub-Zero built the whole platform around one decision — two separate sealed systems, one per compartment — and that decision explains most of what you will ever see go wrong with one, including the fault that confuses everybody.
Dual refrigeration
One warm compartment does not mean one broken appliance
Two evaporators, two circuits, two sets of things to fail. So a fresh-food side drifting into the fifties while the freezer sits rock solid at zero is not a contradiction and not a compressor — it is the fresh-food half, and usually its evaporator, its fan or its defrost. Owners often let this one run for weeks because half the appliance is still perfect.
The reverse case is rarer and more urgent: a freezer losing ground while the fresh-food side holds. Check the ice first. A freezer coil under heavy frost with the compartment slowly rising is a defrost fault, and the longer it runs the more it drags the rest of the unit.

Where the condenser is tells you what to expect
Older 500-series units carry their condenser high, and the dust they collect comes down onto them from the room. The 600 series and everything built on the Classic architecture since moved it to the base behind the front grille, where it is far easier to clean and far easier to forget — a base grille four inches off a kitchen floor collects everything the floor does.
The integrated and Designer units hide the machinery behind a joinery panel, which changes access more than it changes diagnosis. Undercounter drawers and wine cabinets are their own small world: little condenser, short fan, cabinet full of heat.
Later panels will tell you when the condenser needs cleaning, and that message is worth taking seriously rather than clearing. A dirty condenser is the cheapest fault on this list and the one that manufactures the expensive ones.
The recurring five on this platform:
- Condenser matted with dust and pet hair behind the base grille
- Evaporator fan slowed, stalled or fouled by ice on one side only
- Defrost heater or its terminator, leaving a coil that never fully clears
- Magnetic door gasket gone hard at a hinge corner, so the door seals everywhere except there
- Ice module: fill valve, harvest heater, or the bin sensor that stopped asking for more
Before you call
The plate behind the upper grille
Model and serial live behind the upper grille on most of these, and on some the plate is on the inner wall of the fresh-food compartment above the top drawer. Those two numbers decide which board, which fan and which gasket the platform takes — parts differ between production runs of the same model number.
Read them out when you call, describe what each compartment is showing, and the right part often travels on the first visit rather than the second.
