Oven Not Heating or Heating Unevenly
Troubleshoot why your oven is not reaching proper temperature or heating unevenly.
Troubleshooting Steps
Check Oven Settings
Verify you have selected bake mode and set a temperature. Some ovens require pressing Start after setting temperature.
Verify Power Supply
Electric ovens need 240V power. Check both circuit breakers - some ovens have two. Gas ovens need both gas and electrical connections.
Test with Oven Thermometer
Place an oven thermometer in the center and preheat to 350F. Wait 20 minutes after preheat signal and check actual temperature.
Inspect Heating Elements
Electric ovens: Look for visible damage to bake or broil elements. They should glow red when heating. Gas ovens: Observe if the igniter glows and gas ignites.
Check Gas Igniter (Gas Ovens)
The igniter should glow bright orange for 60-90 seconds before gas ignites. A weak glow that does not ignite gas indicates a failing igniter.
Clean Temperature Sensor
The sensor probe measures oven temperature. Food splatter on it can cause inaccurate readings. Clean gently with soft cloth.
Consider Calibration
If temperature is consistently off by 25 degrees or more, the oven may need calibration. Check manual for user calibration procedure.
When to Call a Professional
- Heating elements are visibly damaged
- Gas igniter glows but gas does not ignite
- Temperature is significantly inaccurate after calibration
- Error codes are displayed
- You smell gas without ignition
