Spring is the ideal time to address appliance maintenance that may have been neglected during busy winter months. This checklist covers the essential tasks that keep your appliances running smoothly.
Start with refrigerator condenser coils. Winter holiday cooking and closed-up houses mean more dust accumulation. Pull the unit away from the wall or remove the bottom grille to access and clean coils thoroughly.
Check refrigerator door seals. Winter temperature fluctuations stress gaskets. Look for cracks, gaps, or areas that do not seal properly. Clean seals with warm soapy water to restore flexibility.
Service the ice maker. Change the water filter if you have not done so recently. Empty the ice bin completely and wash it. Stale ice from winter absorbs freezer odors.
Deep clean the dishwasher. Remove and clean the filter. Run a cleaning cycle with dishwasher cleaner. Check spray arms for clogs. Inspect door seals for mold or buildup.
Clean range burners and grates thoroughly. Winter comfort food cooking leaves residue. For gas ranges, check flame patterns. For electric, ensure coils or elements are seated properly.
Inspect ventilation hood filters. Heavy winter cooking with windows closed means filters worked hard. Replace disposable filters; soak and clean metal mesh filters.
Run a cleaning cycle on your oven. Whether self-cleaning or steam cleaning, remove built-up residue from winter baking. Check oven light bulbs and replace if needed.
Check washing machine hoses. Winter temperature changes can stress rubber hoses. Look for bulges, cracks, or deterioration. Consider replacing rubber hoses with braided stainless steel.
Clean dryer vent ductwork. Winter is peak dryer usage season. Lint accumulates in ductwork, reducing efficiency and creating fire risk. Disconnect and clean the entire vent path.
Test all appliance functions. After maintenance, verify everything operates correctly. Run test cycles, check temperatures, and confirm all features work. Address any issues before summer arrives.
