Induction Cooktop Troubleshooting: Common Issues Solved

By Sarah Chen|February 13, 2023|8 min read

Induction cooktops use electromagnetic fields to heat cookware directly. This technology is highly efficient but can behave differently than gas or electric coils. Understanding how induction works helps troubleshoot problems.

The most common complaint is the cooktop not recognizing cookware. Induction requires magnetic cookware—test with a magnet. If it sticks firmly, the cookware is compatible. If not, you need different pots and pans.

Cookware size affects operation. Most induction zones require cookware that covers a minimum percentage of the cooking zone. Small pots on large zones may not register. Center cookware properly on the zone.

The cooktop beeping without heating usually indicates incompatible or improperly placed cookware. It can also indicate the unit has detected overheating and entered a safety shutdown.

Uneven heating is often a cookware issue. Induction works best with flat-bottomed cookware. Warped pans that do not make full contact with the glass heat unevenly. Replace damaged cookware.

Error codes on induction cooktops have specific meanings. Consult your owner's manual for your model's codes. Common codes relate to overheating, voltage irregularities, or internal component failures.

Scratches on the glass surface are usually cosmetic and do not affect function. Avoid sliding cookware across the surface. Use the recommended cleaning products for induction glass.

Cooling fans in the unit are normal. Induction cooktops contain electronics that require cooling. The fan may run during and after cooking. It should be quiet, not loud or grinding.

Power supply issues affect performance. Induction cooktops require significant electrical capacity. Voltage fluctuations or overloaded circuits can cause erratic behavior. Have an electrician verify the installation.
