Ice Maker Not Working? Complete Troubleshooting Guide

Ice makers are convenience features we take for granted until they stop working. Before scheduling service, work through this troubleshooting guide to identify common issues that may have simple solutions.

Check the water supply first. The shut-off valve behind or beneath the refrigerator must be fully open. A kinked water line restricts flow. Frozen supply lines are common in winter—a hair dryer can thaw them safely.

Examine the water filter. A clogged filter dramatically reduces water flow to the ice maker. Most manufacturers recommend replacement every 6 months. If ice production dropped gradually, the filter is a likely culprit.

Verify the ice maker is turned on. The on/off switch or arm varies by model. On some units, a raised arm signals that the ice bin is full and stops production. Lower the arm or flip the switch to resume making ice.

Check the freezer temperature. Ice makers require temperatures below 10 degrees Fahrenheit to function properly. If the freezer is too warm, ice production stops. Verify temperature with a thermometer, not just the display.

Inspect the ice maker's fill tube. This small tube delivers water to the ice mold. Ice can accumulate here, blocking water flow. A frozen fill tube often indicates temperature or defrost system issues.

Listen during a fill cycle. The water inlet valve makes a buzzing sound when water enters. If you hear the buzz but see no water, the valve may have failed or water pressure may be too low.

Low water pressure causes small or hollow ice cubes. Home water pressure should be at least 20 psi for proper ice maker function. Undersized water lines or partially closed valves reduce pressure.
