Gas Smell from Your Range? Take These Steps Immediately

Smelling gas in your kitchen is alarming and requires immediate action. Natural gas is odorless, but utility companies add mercaptan to give it a distinctive rotten-egg smell for safety.

If the gas smell is strong, leave your home immediately. Do not turn on lights, use phones, or create any sparks. Once safely outside, call your gas utility's emergency line or 911.

For faint gas odors, first check if a burner was left on slightly. The smell may be unburned gas from a burner that did not ignite properly or was accidentally bumped on.

Check pilot lights on older ranges. If the pilot is out, gas may be escaping. Follow your manufacturer's instructions for relighting, or contact a service professional if you are uncomfortable doing so.

Gas smell only when burners are on may indicate incomplete combustion. Check flame color—it should be primarily blue with small yellow tips. Mostly yellow flames suggest adjustment is needed.

The gas shut-off valve behind the range allows you to stop gas flow. Knowing its location before an emergency makes it easier to respond safely. The valve is usually chrome or yellow.

Gas leaks can occur at connection points. The flexible connector between the gas line and range can develop leaks over time. Any connection point can loosen with movement or vibration.

Do not attempt to repair gas connections yourself. Gas work requires proper training and tools. Even small leaks pose fire and explosion risks. Always use qualified professionals.

After any gas incident, have a professional inspect the range and connections before resuming use. Safety should never be compromised when dealing with gas appliances.
